About Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Confession or Penance) is a sacrament of healing in which we receive God's forgiveness for our sins. Through this sacrament, we are reconciled with God and with the Church.
Jesus gave the apostles the power to forgive sins when he said: "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained" (John 20:22-23).
Confession Times
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available at the following times:
- Saturday: 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM at St John XXIII Church, Hope Valley
- By appointment: Contact the parish office to arrange a time
During Advent and Lent, additional Reconciliation services may be offered. Please check the parish bulletin for details.
How to Go to Confession
If it has been a while since your last confession, or you are unsure how to celebrate this sacrament, the priest will guide you. Here is a simple outline:
- Prepare: Examine your conscience and reflect on your sins since your last confession.
- Begin: Make the Sign of the Cross. Say "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It has been [time] since my last confession."
- Confess: Tell your sins to the priest.
- Listen: The priest will offer guidance and give you a penance.
- Act of Contrition: Pray an act of contrition expressing your sorrow for sin.
- Absolution: The priest will absolve you of your sins.
- Penance: After confession, complete the penance given by the priest.
Act of Contrition
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you, and I detest all my sins because of your just punishments, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of your grace, to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin.
Amen.
