Para Hills Modbury Catholic Parish has a rich history spanning over six decades, formed from the union of two vibrant parish communities that have served the Catholic faithful in Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs.
Holy Trinity Church, Para Hills
1961 – The Para Hills parish was established to serve the growing Catholic population in the area. Early Masses were celebrated in temporary locations.
1963 – The first church building was constructed, providing a permanent home for the community.
1970s – The parish continued to grow with the expansion of the surrounding suburbs. Various parish groups and ministries were established.
1980s – Holy Trinity Church underwent renovations and improvements to better serve the growing community.
1990s – The parish celebrated its growth and continued to develop its pastoral programs and community outreach.
2004 – Para Hills parish merged with Modbury parish to form the combined Para Hills Modbury Catholic Parish.
St John XXIII Church, Modbury (Hope Valley)
1973 – The Modbury parish was established to serve Catholics in the Modbury, Hope Valley, and surrounding areas.
1975 – The church was named in honor of Pope St John XXIII, who convened the Second Vatican Council.
1980s – The parish flourished with active participation in liturgy, social activities, and community service.
1990s – Various renovations and improvements were made to the church and parish facilities.
1998 – Major celebrations marked the 25th anniversary of the parish's establishment.
2004 – Modbury parish merged with Para Hills parish to form the combined Para Hills Modbury Catholic Parish.
Para Hills Modbury Catholic Parish (2004–Present)
2004 – The two parishes officially merged, creating a single parish with two Mass centres. This brought together the strengths and traditions of both communities.
2005–2015 – The combined parish developed new programs and initiatives, while maintaining the unique character of each church community.
2016–2022 – The parish continued to adapt and grow, facing challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic while remaining a strong community of faith.
2023 – Fr Kym Spurling was appointed as Parish Priest, bringing renewed energy and vision to the parish community.
Present – Today, Para Hills Modbury Catholic Parish continues to serve the faithful across Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs, with regular Masses at both St John XXIII and Holy Trinity churches.
