Anointing of the Sick

About the Sacrament

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing that brings the grace and comfort of Christ to those who are seriously ill, facing surgery, or weakened by old age. Through this sacrament, the sick person receives the strength and peace to face their illness with faith and courage.

As St. James wrote: "Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up" (James 5:14-15).

Who Can Receive This Sacrament?

The Anointing of the Sick may be received by:

• Those suffering from serious illness
• Those facing surgery
• The elderly who are weakened by age
• Those whose health has seriously deteriorated

This sacrament can be received more than once, especially if the person's condition worsens or if they face a new illness.

The Rite of Anointing

The sacrament includes:

• Prayers of faith by the priest and those present
• Laying on of hands by the priest
• Anointing with the Oil of the Sick on the forehead and hands
• If possible, the reception of Holy Communion (Viaticum for the dying)

Communal Anointing

Throughout the year, our parish may offer communal celebrations of the Anointing of the Sick, often in connection with a special Mass. These provide an opportunity for parishioners who are sick or elderly to receive the sacrament together with the support of the community. Please check the parish bulletin for upcoming dates.

Hospital and Home Visits

If you or a family member is in hospital, a care facility, or homebound and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the parish office to arrange a visit from the priest.

In an Emergency

In cases of serious illness or imminent death where a priest is needed urgently, please contact the parish office. If after hours, you may leave a message and the priest will respond as soon as possible.
